Wharton's Jelly

Background

Wharton’s jelly, a gelatinous connective tissue contained in the umbilical cord.

Wharton’s jelly can be used in treatments that are regulated under Section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (PHS Act) and 21 CFR Part 1271, provided it meets specific criteria related to minimal manipulation and homologous use.

We process the tissue in a way that doesn’t fundamentally alter its original characteristics and that it’s used for the same purpose in the recipient as it was in the donor – for structural support and cushioning.

Wharton's Jelly Detailed Breakdown

Extracellular Matrix:

  • Hyaluronic acid: provides hydration and supporting cell migration.
  • Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs): contributea to the structural integrity and support cell growth.
  • Collagen Fibers: Types I, III, IV, and V are present, providing tensile strength and promoting cell attachment.
  • Microfibrillar Network: Composed of fibrillin and type VI collagen, it further contributes to the extracellular matrix structure.
  • Growth Factors and Cytokines: Play a role in cell signaling and tissue regeneration.

Cells:

  • MSCs: Multipotent differentiation potential, capable of becoming various cell types like bone, muscle, and cartilage.
  • Myofibroblasts: Fibroblast-like cells that play a role in wound healing and tissue remodeling.
  • Mast Cells: A type of immune cell, often found near the umbilical vessels.
  • Multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring cells (MUSE cells) are known for their ability to home to damaged sites, differentiate into various cell types, and promote tissue repair.

Other Components:

  • Free Fatty Acids: Both saturated and unsaturated free fatty acids are present in Wharton's jelly.
  • Extracellular Vesicles (EVs): Including exosomes and microvesicles, these vesicles carry bioactive molecules and play a role in cell communication and tissue regeneration.
